Book Description When behavior and cognitive therapy mixed into cognitive behavior therapies, largely during the 1980s, cognitive models became dominant and basic behavior principles were largely sidelined in clinical psychology curricula. Issues in cognition became the focus of case conceptualization and intervention planning for most therapists. In recent years there has been a renewed interest in learning theory, and basic behavior principles are once again becoming central in clinical practice. This is especially true in the new "third-wave" behavior therapies which begin to address areas of concern in the cognitive models. If you've been practicing for a while, classical behaviorism may not have been a major part of your clinical education. In order to broaden your understanding of learning theory and make the best use of the newer psychotherapies, you need to revisit basic behavioral principles from a practical angle. The ABCs of Human Behavior offers you, the practicing clinician, a solid and practical introduction to the basics of modern behavioral psychology. The book focuses both on the classical principles of learning as well as more recent developments that explain language and cognition in behavioral and contextual terms. These principles are not just discussed in the abstract--rather the book shows how the principles of learning apply in a clinical context. Practical and easy to read, the book walks you through both common sense and clinical examples that will help you use behavioral principles to observe, explain, and influence behavior in a therapeutic setting. "...a must read for clinicians and students from all theoretical backgrounds." --Christopher R. Martell, Ph.D., ABPP, clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and psychology at the University of Washington and author of Depression in Context

Useful theory and principles in the human service May 15, 2008 Any professional or student in the field of psychology or mental health will find this book extremely valuable. In this volume the authors give a precise, accessible and entertaining introduction to the theory and principles of behaviorally oriented psychological treatment, including a contemporary account on human language and cognition. What is most important, it introduces the philosophical approach known as functional contextualism. From this perspective, science and theory is behavior that is selected by an enviroment based on its usefulness in relation to predefined goals. The authors words in this text will no doubt elicit and help organize much behavior that will be in the service of many human beings.
Great for psychotherapists May 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was extraordinarily impressed with this book. As a Psychology professor who greatly values a solid understanding of behavioral principles for my clinical graduate students, I've been unable to find a primary text that conveys them in a succint and relevant fashion. Existing books on applied behavior analysis contain too much material that is irrelevant to clinical behavior therapy, go into too much detail for my already overworked students, and fail to provide clearly relevant clinical examples of these principles' applications. This book changes all that with one fell swoop. I'll be regularly assigning it in my graduate psychotherapy class, and would readily recommend it to any psychotherapist wanting to get vertical on the relevance of behavioral principles to therapy.
a contemporary classic March 6, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a book that I took to my heart, and will probably use many years yet to come. I can see myself re-read it and to sometimes read parts again and again. I think this book will become a contemporary classic. It is an excellent introduction to behavioral therapy with a language allowing me to easily grasp and understand the different aspects of the theory and how it works. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to know and learn about behavioral therapy.
You will love this book March 5, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is a wonderful introduction to behavioural therapy. It is useful for both clinicians working with psychotherapy and students. The book is worth reading more than once. You will find it very easy to read and I only heard positive comments from students and clinicians that read it. In the book you find lots of clinical examples. The book presents both classical principals for behavioural therapy and newer train of thoughts especially concerning human language and cognitions. This book is one of my favourite books in the therapeutic field.
