5 out of 5 stars Great Book   December 12, 2006

Toseland's book is considered by most experts in the field to be one of the best resources for understanding group work today. I have enjoyed this text and consider it an important addition to any Social Work library. After having Dr. Toseland as a professor is it clear that he is truely a master of group work. This book is worth every penny!!

1 out of 5 stars Dumbing Down social work   October 22, 2006

This book has no breadth nor depth. My students hate it and I dislike it myself. I stopped using it halfway through the term - I have never done that before with a text. This text could be effectively condensed to a fourth of its current size. Unfortunately many of the books in this genre I have reviewed for groups, an important topic for new human service and social work students, are the same. The chapter on the history of group work is pretty good, but the rest of the book is tedious.

3 out of 5 stars chore to read   October 19, 2006

This is the most popular goup work text; however, not a student in my class likes this book. The information is all there and well organized but it is a chore to read it. The writing style is dense, dry, and laborious.

4 out of 5 stars Group work Practice   October 21, 2003

The book has been written in simply language for the social work student/ practioner, however, anyone working with groups will find some useful information.

The book has been updated over the years to include new info. on areas such as cultural diverse issues affecting group work in the US. This I believe is applicable not only to the US but to other area such as the Caribbean which share diverse cultures.

It also gives a detail listing of possible source material on adolescence and the Elderly.
