Product Description (2006 ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award, Bronze Finalist in Parenting category). The newly updated and expanded guide to raising a teenager with an attention deficit disorder is more comprehensive than ever. Thousands more parents can rely on Dendy's compassionately presented expertise based on the latest research and decades of her experience as a parent, teacher, school psychologist, and mental health counselor. Her book looks at key areas that make adolescence--an already challenging time of life--potentially more difficult for kids with ADD or ADHD: academics, dating, driving, socializing, and greater independence. TEENAGERS WITH ADD AND ADHD gives parents insight on everything from understanding the diagnosis to treatment options, and from behavioral and academic issues, to parent involvement and self-advocacy. The new edition includes additional or updated information in several areas. A separate chapter on medications provides details on specific drugs, including many new ones, and what research shows about their effectiveness in improving attention, impulse control, and distractibility. Dendy discusses new findings about the role of executive function problems and how they relate to teenagers difficulties with organizational skills, long-range planning, and staying on task. She advises parents on their role in working with schools to find strategies for academic success. Teenagers also speak out about their condition, and Dendy points to ways to involve them in their own treatment plan. In addition, the book covers coexisting disorders such as learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, Tourette syndrome, and Asperger syndrome. Since 1995, this nuts and bolts guide has given parents hope and empowerment. It's chockfull of the latest data and proven strategies that can help manage the symptoms of ADD and ADHD at home and school.

More of the same May 22, 2008 I have a small collection of ADHD books.....but this text seemed repetitive with not a lot of new information and not presented with much creativity. I returned it. If it is your first book, it's fine.
Excellent Resource May 8, 2008 This book packs in alot of information. I have a teenage daughter with add and found I just had too many questions about how to handle her new independence and escalating middle school issues. I found all the answers and more. All middle, high school and parents of adhd teens should have this book to further understand their children. This book gives hope to their future.
A Mom of teen with ADD April 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read several books on the subject and this is BY FAR the best, most useful, most right-on, and easy to read I have found on the subject. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in understanding the disorder and should be required reading for all teachers and guidance counselors.
A great resource October 20, 2007 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
My teenager was just diagnosed with ADD. This book is user friendly for parents and still a very valuable tool for teachers (I am a teacher also). It just explains so many "mysteries" that the AD/HD child presents: why can't they be on time, why do they battle you, why is everything around them messy, why, why, why......? AND, as another reviewer stated, I am validated as a mom. I am not the awful mom I thought I must be. Now I can keep digging our way through this and be pro-active to help my child. The book offers solid, realistic guidance. The book is also full of HOPE. With early intervention, these kids will shake out to be wonderful people, though the ride might be bumpy! Be sure to check out "A Bird's Eye View" by the same author.
Teens with ADD/ADHD April 14, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is written by a highly qualified woman..who has ADD herself. It came recommended to me from a friend who has raised four kids of her own with ADHD.
It is honest, informative and gives a lot of insights as to how to understand and help teens with ADD/ADHD. The author also has a background in teaching and counseling, which makes me find the book even more credible. I also bought her took on teaching teens with ADD and it is a good reference too.
