Another book is better. November 23, 2008 Another book is better than the Gallaudet Dictionary of American Sign Language. The better book is the Random House Webster's American Sign Language Dictionary, Unabridged. It contains dictionary definitions for the words you are looking up, an explanation of the reason why the sign is the way it is, and a written explanaition of how to make the sign. None of these features are in the Gallaudet Dictionary.
At first I did not understand the value of the dictionary definitions in the Random House Dictionary. But then I realized that some English words have very different meanings which are represented by completely different signs. For Example, the word "country" can mean a foreign state or a rural location. Those two meanings have are represented by two different signs.
Great November 5, 2008 I was fully impressed by the included DVD's features. It allows you to search he words, and it lets youplay the word slowly or in step-motion. Very helpful.
Some words you would expect to be in a dictionary aren't in there though. For instance, "pot" only shows up as an alternative for marajuana.
Could be much better October 31, 2008 This book has many signs. However, it is missing the descriptions of the signs and the reasons behind signs that help them to be remembered. It does come with a DVD of all the signs in the book which is very nice. As a reference the book is okay. But to learn new signs it is not.
Companion DVD Makes The Book Worth Buying October 18, 2008 The Gallaudet Dictionary of American Sign Language is a useful reference book for beginning to advanced sign language students. The dictionary contains over 3000 ASL signs, and the companion DVD includes video clips of all the signs in the book, making the purchase of this book even more of a bargain.
