Product Description

2 psychologists and mothers elucidate a problem that may affect as many as 10 to 20% of children.

Children with sensory regulation problems overreact or under react to sensory experiences most of us take in stride. The resulting behaviour--battles over dressing, bathing, and toothbrushing; inability to function in a busy classroom; intolerance of holidays, sleepovers, sports, and other social situations--causes chaos and heartbreak. This problem is not well understood by many professionals treating children today: many childhood psychiatric disorders may have an unidentified sensory component.

Drs. Smith and Gouze, practicing psychologists and parents of children with sensory processing difficulties, explain how to recognize and treat this problem, and how to help these children succeed at home, at school, and with peers. Practical, compassionate, and field-tested by the authors as parents and professionals, this book is likely to be life-changing for many families.

o For parents of kids with ADD/ADHD, Asperger's, and other difficulties and also psychologists/psychiatrists, educators, occupational therapists.
o According to the chairman of the American Academy of Paediatrics' committee on children with disabilities, as many as 10-12% of children may have some type of sensory processing problem. Among kids with developmental disabilities such as autism and cerebral palsy, incidence may be as high as 30%. Sensory problems are sometimes confused with ADD and can occur in kids with ADD/ADHD, learning differences, Asperger's, and more. Treatment won't be effective unless sensory component is diagnosed/addressed.
o Psychologists/psychiatrists are only beginning to learn about sensory problems, originally identified by occupational therapists.

3 out of 5 stars Agree with most   December 31, 2007
I have to agree with most here in saying that this book was helpful on some things but too extreme on others. You really have to know your child. Worth the read but would have just as well borrowed it from the library than purchase it ... does not constitute as a book that I often look upon for reference.

5 out of 5 stars the best   October 27, 2007
This is the best book I've read about Sensory Issues. It helps you get inside the experience of a child with these issues. It helps elicit a compassionate, understanding response to these children who can be hard to live with. It is helpful and obviously written by mothers who have lived it.

5 out of 5 stars The Sensory-Sensitive child   October 17, 2007
This book is a very good resource for parents of SPD(Sensory Processing Disorder) children. I especially like the way they describe SPD; I know now how to describe it to other people. This book describes behavioral problems that SPD kids can have and how to help them cope with it. It is very good information. It is a must have book to go along with "The Out of Synch Child"

It is very informative. It explains what is going on through the childs eyes as well as the frustrations that we as parents are going through with such a situation. It has made me better aware of the symtoms and how to deal with them. It also lets me know that my son is not alone in his struggles and it has been identified as a "real" issue, not just what a lot of people like to say is just an excuse as to why your child is misbehaving. I appreciated the input and am making a doctor's appointment next week in order to try and work on my son's sensory issues. I am extremely thankful that I found this book to purchase and read.

The Sensory Sensitive Child is one of the best books I have read on the subject. It truly helps explain what the child and families may be going through and gives practical solutions for dealing with sensory processing disorder. I recommend it highly.
