5 out of 5 stars Back to Words, not Weapons   October 27, 2008
Easy to read! Funny and Smart! This book is a must have for all of us out there who deal with people that take little care in what they say. Life is stressful and often times that stress seeps into the way people talk to each other. This book not only teaches us what to say when people are being careless with us, it helps us identify those moments when we have let our own frustration come through in our words, as well.
Tongue Fu! is an artfully constructed package of lessons that move us to use our words to communicate rather than attack or vent. In our quest for information may have abandoned tact in search for clarity. However, it is not necessary to be rude when being honest. Tongue Fu! gives real life examples of the common ways people unintentionally mistreat others by taking less than the necessary care with our words. Each example comes with an explanation of why our usual words can harm as well as alternatives that can help.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-read Book   May 18, 2008
Tongue Fu, a book written by Sam Horn is truly a must-read book. I have actually purchased it two years ago and finished reading. While I am still practicing it yet my friend borrowed that book and never return it ever since.
I have just purchased another 3 copies, one for me, the other two are for my niece and nephew who are interested in learning about this specific skills.
I highly recommend this book to be on your top list. Purchase today and you will be transformed into a better person.

1 out of 5 stars Only for beginners   November 12, 2007

I wasn't really impressed. 95% of the book is basically to avoid confrontations at any cost - heavy use of the phrase "Is this conflict worth risking a friendship/your health/your well being/your life over? In other words, give up and take your lumps. The few pages that advise standing up for yourself tell you either to

a) Tell them you won't take this (and assume this is going to work)
b) Refer you to another book for handling sociopaths

I kept at it in the hopes that it would get better, but it never did. Live and learn.

I suppose this book might be helpful for someone with absolutely no social skills, or no experience in asserting yourself - or maybe people who fly off the handle at every confrontation. And I see where Tony's bit comes in - she advises some specific language to make mild conflicts easier and that kind of jibes with his NLP stuff. But if you're a regular person who gets along with most people and has some degree of tact in communications, your money could be spent better elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Very well presented   October 26, 2007

This book is packed with great ideas and perspective for how to view confrontation. It's an easy read and also an easy 'remember'. I like to have it around so every now and again I can pick it up to be re-inspired to make the best effort at positive (and effective) communications as I can.

5 out of 5 stars Basic, Cordial Instructions for Communication   August 2, 2007

This is a wonderful book about conflict resolution and how to deal with the average person in a confrontational situation. I love the way Sam Horn writes. She breaks it down into readily understood bites, with lots of examples and more than a bit of humor. Our society has become so fast paced and stressed, that cordiality and politeness has gotten lost. And, as the old saying goes, "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." By being patient, empathetic, and compassionate, we can get more done with more cooperation and goodwill.

The instructions in this book are basics for civil human communication. Many of the suggestions are beneficial for those who are interested in being more gentle and spiritual in their everyday life. Some of her ideas are very simple, but very powerful to smooth over some of the bumps of human contact. It's a very empowering book, teaching how the reader how to stand up for their rights while not tromping on the rights of others.

As I said before, this is for conflicts with the average person. In some situations, the ideas in this book fall short and may actually inflame the attacker. When that may be the case, I highly recommend her other book "Take the Bully by the Horns: Stop Unethical, Uncooperative, or Unpleasant People from Running and Ruining Your Life".

Whether used in the business or personal life, "Tongue Fu!" is a necessary resource to learn how to be more responsive and get more accomplished with grace. Not only will I be incorporating some of the techniques in my private life, I will be recommending it to my hypnotherapy and coaching clients.
