Amazon.com Review "We have been trying to feed our hurting, longing hearts with physical food," writes Gwen Shamblin, registered dietician and founder of the Weigh Down program, which emphasizes "God's power--not 'will power.'" This book offers instruction on how to eat only when physically hungry, how to "nourish the soul with a relationship with God," and how not to confuse different hunger urges. The diet plan teaches you not to overeat by letting you eat exactly what you want, but much less of it. The key is to understand hunger, recognize fullness, and sense what your body is really calling for. You learn to "rate" food by its appeal, and eat your favorite foods first, stopping when you're getting full (not waiting until you're stuffed). This is not a nutritional guide; in fact, Shamblin's own sample menu is high in fat, cholesterol, sugar, and salt. The Weigh Down Diet is, however, a guide to using your religious beliefs to help you stop overeating and see food in a new light. This book inspires you with scriptural passages, discussions of "God's rules" about eating, and assurances that God's love will help you win your battle with weight.
Product Description You can now join the thousands who have discovered a liberating new weight control plan and are turning to God to take away the desire to overeat. The Weigh Down Workshop, a remarkable program which already has thousands of support groups across the country and has gained national attention in media from "A Current Affair" to Woman's Day, is now available as a book. What makes this ground-breaking approach to weight loss so unique is that participants can eat any kind of food-including fats and sweets--and be able to stop in the middle of a candy bar when their stomachs are full.
People who have known no end to fullness and who have no control over their late-night binges have learned through the Weigh Down Method that God can remove the seemingly irresistible pull of the pantry and drive-thru restaurants. With this approach, participants can reduce the volume of food they want to one-third of what it used to be and yet still eat with fulfilled satisfaction. Yet this is not a diet like others you've seen. Dieting only increases chewing whereas with the Weigh Down approach, you will chew less food, but more importantly, with God's help-want less food. Quite simply, this approach equals weight loss. Weigh Down gives back hope; hope to dieters who will learn that they are not a failure. Stop torturing yourself. God did not put chocolate or lasagna on earth to torture us--but rather for our enjoyment! Hallelujah!

Simple, Clear, Truth November 20, 2008 I highly recommend this book and its follow-up Rise Above and the Treasure Series. "It's a choice every hour, then every day, then it will be PERMANENT RESOLUTE PURPOSE" to only live for God and doing His will all day, everyday. She teaches that overeating is greed for food which the Bible says is Idolatry (Eph.5:5, Col.3:5) We don't wake up every morning greedy for air. Food is just food and only needed for fuel. The greed for more is from our own hearts which is where Jesus said that the evil comes from (wanting more, more, more). This applies to so many areas: more control over husbands and/or bosses, etc. I have lost almost all of the excess weight and as my husband says, "you have changed so much and I want you to know that I see that and I love you. Keep going after God's will the way you are." That still brings tears to my eyes. So, YES, I highly recommend this book and all of them. READ THEM & DO IT!! Please, don't just read them and not do it then wonder why you aren't changing. Hold yourself personnaly accountable, because we know that God will.

Well worth the purchase. This is a thoughtful, spiritual approach to weight loss and care for one's body.
Life Changing October 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I found this book, I read it cover to cover. So many of Gwen's words supported what I had been thinking for a long time, but which the "experts" told me was wrong. I put the principles into practice, and I haven't looked back. I have lost 30lbs, kept it off for 3 years now, and counting. I too experienced some lethargy and headache initially. But I liken that to the withdrawel experience suffered by alcoholics. It was over in 2-3 weeks, and I have never felt healthier! I can do things I didn't realize I had given up, like run and talk on the cell phone at the same time. Gwen doesn't say "don't exercise", she says it doesn't help weight loss because it is the wrong focus. Exercise because God made your body and it feels good to move it the way He intended! Some people swim, others dance, another gardens, whatever. Read it for yourself, and draw your own conclusions.

A word about all the negative reviews..... August 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
True, she teaches to eat only when hungry, stop when full. NOT to Starve yourself. I eat when Im hungry. Ive never went hungry. I just stopped overeating. Ive lost 25 pounds so far, its came off slow but I havent felt deprived in any way. For those who wrote the negative comments and those of you who think that you are going to get into heaven by worshiping false gods (food, alcohol, drugs) then you are mistaken. In other words, eating too much is just as sinful as drinking too much! So by saying that Gwyn is overreacting by saying so, is a misunderstanding on your part. You wouldnt say the same thing if it were drugs or sex would you? No. A false God is a false God, whatever it be. And for those that feel that they had to starve themselves were obviously not getting the whole point of the book which is to turn away from the created and toward the creator. Gwyn says the things that most people dont want to hear, the TRUTH. Some people refuse to be inconvenienced or choose not to believe that THEY have the problem, they think the FOOD is the problem. They just want everything else to change, so no matter what, they will never truly find God. I found more truth and inspiration from her than from any other source. Even pastors. They dont want to offend anyone or have paritioners turn away. So they shy away from the truth. And truth be told, a large number of priests and pastors are overweight themselves!!! How can they teach "control" or anything else when they cant control their eating? To say she is a "cult" or anything of the sorts is disgusting and anyone who tries to say otherwise is doing nothing but trying to turn you from God. If you read the book and truly turn toward God, you will understand and strive to have the relationship she has with God. Too often people want to think they can cheat their way into Gods favor and actually judge those who think otherwise. Some of you will understand and agree with the book, some wont. You have the power to choose your own fate! If this seemed a little harsh, then so be it. I want those of you out there to know that there is hope, there is a way, you just have to open your heart to God. Drugs, money, objects, FOOD, will never give you the happiness and full life you want and deserve. Gwyn tries to show you that and if some people cant handle it, If God is too much of a "burden", then their fate has been decided. Get the book. Chances are it will change your life, it did mine and countless others.
