5 out of 5 stars The best surgical reference book for medical language specialists   May 24, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Before you read on, please understand that this book is NOT a dictionary. The Surgical Word Book by Claudia Tessier has always been recommended by medical language specialists (medical transcriptionists, editors, CMTs, RMTs, and MT educators) because it is the most comprehensive. I may not be far wrong in saying it lists down EVERY possible surgical and medical instrument currently known in the healthcare industry by this edition's publication year (2004). It also includes all the medical techniques, maneuvers, types of surgeries and operations currently known to doctors and nurses until 2004. It is a considerable improvement on the previous version just by the new addition of new instruments, words, and techniques alone, giving a very hefty 2,362-page book. If you are a newbie acute care MT, then this book is for you as it will be an invaluable reference in transcribing operative reports and procedure notes, and it will quickly get you up to speed on acute care transcription. If you are an MT editor, this will help you in checking acute care MTs' documents. If you are an MT working at a doctor's office or in the hospital and don't want to have too many reference books or materials lying around you, then this should be one of about 3 word books you should always have with you. My only regret is that it doesn't have a CD version.

5 out of 5 stars Transcriptionists necessity   May 16, 2008
Just finished a 14 week course to become a Medical Transcriptionist. This is the best BEST reference! Please, do yourselves a favor and purchase this reference for your library!

This book has really help with terminology. I had difficulty figuring out how to look things up when I figured out how they had it sorted it was easiler. I still find the doctors dictate words that are not in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Needs Updating More Frequently   September 10, 2007

I loved the previous edition of this book and used it daily in my work as a medical transcriptionist. I bought this edition expecting the same experience, but I've been really disappointed. I only find what I'm looking for about 20% to 25% of the time. I think it could be an excellent reference but as frequently as new products, equipment and procedures come along, updating should be done more often.

If you are a new MT, an updated version of this book will be of help you. If you are a senior MT, as I am, and transcribe many operative reports, I recommend the Stedman's books: Stedman's Surgery Words, and Stedman's Equipment Words.
