5 out of 5 stars The Best Introductory Book for Audiology   November 3, 2008
I have been using this book for years in my introduction to Audiology course. I have used every major text, and this book is the best one. It is the most accurate and comprehensive. Students give it excellent reviews. And most of my grad students refer to this book for background information for their graduate courses.

I understand that some schools use this book for their graduate courses. I think that is ok as long as they also have supplemental readings.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, bad edition   June 30, 2000

I read the first 3 chapters of this book in preparation for a class I'll be taking with Stanley Gelfand (the author); maybe this will help future readers of the book. This book is densely packed with lots of information and is extremely interesting, but it has lots of big problems.

The diagrams are not sufficiently marked - often, the reader has to discern from the text which side of the drawing is anterior, posterior, lateral, medial, etc. The captions below the diagrams often don't match the text, either.

There is no glossary. There are a lot of typographical errors - for a student unfamiliar with the "cgs system," as I was, it's not much of a leap to think that a "certimeter" is a unit of measure, until one realizes that it's a typo and should be "centimeter."

I like the book for what I've learned from it but it's got a lot of problems in it.
