Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Available for the first time in the United States, this international bestseller reveals the secrets of nonverbal communication to give you confidence and control in any face-to-face encounter–from making a great first impression and acing a job interview to finding the right partner.

It is a scientific fact that people’s gestures give away their true intentions. Yet most of us don’t know how to read body language–and don’t realize how our own physical movements speak to others. Now the world’s foremost experts on the subject share their techniques for reading body language signals to achieve success in every area of life.

Drawing upon more than thirty years in the field, as well as cutting-edge research from evolutionary biology, psychology, and medical technologies that demonstrate what happens in the brain, the authors examine each component of body language and give you the basic vocabulary to read attitudes and emotions through behavior.

Discover:
• How palms and handshakes are used to gain control
• The most common gestures of liars
• How the legs reveal what the mind wants to do
• The most common male and female courtship gestures and signals
• The secret signals of cigarettes, glasses, and makeup
• The magic of smiles–including smiling advice for women
• How to use nonverbal cues and signals to communicate more effectively and get the reactions you want

Filled with fascinating insights, humorous observations, and simple strategies that you can apply to any situation, this intriguing book will enrich your communication with and understanding of others–as well as yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Very basic but also very good   November 23, 2008
I just finished reading this book earlier this week and I must say that for anyone who has ever read a book previously on body language that this book will seem to be very basic...at first glance. The authors have crammed quite a bit of information into approximately four hundred pages and have done so in quite an entertaining manner. I am now consciously aware of the body language of others and have tried to improve mine to appear to be more open and honest but it takes work. I have another body language book on my wish list which I have already purchased. After briefly perusing through that book I would have to say this book appears to be more comprehensive and detailed. I would highly recommend this book to family or friends.

3 out of 5 stars Its a good book   October 24, 2008
It's a good book. However, it provides too many examples of "definite" situations. I dont think EVERY sign can be interpreted as one conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Get ready for an eye opening experience.   October 23, 2008
In very few words, after reading this book, you will feel you had your eyes closed your entire life. You will be able to understand how people feel even when they are not saying anything.

My favorite: When a man is excited by a woman, which part of his body can grow to almost 3 times its size?..... No it's not that. The correct answer is pupils. "Pupil size is affected by one's general state of arousal"

To find many more interesting facts read this awesome book.

1 out of 5 stars I feel I've been cheated into buying the book by all the 5-star review   October 23, 2008
9 out of 10 found this review helpful

This book reminds me when I was in grade 8, and had to finish a paper within 2 days. I would go to the library, search for keywords of the topic, and put whatever information I find into a paper. To meet the minimum word requirement, I would expand a good piece of information I find to several paragraphs, and I would also make the fonts a little bigger.

This book seems it has done all that. It has some useful information, but often a single piece of information is explained using 5 pages where a few sentences are really enough. There are some scientific experiments that are irrelevant to the topic discussed, but are there to make it seem credible. Most information, however, is based on the author's personal opinions without any scientific proof, and a simple piece of opinion is, again, explained using many pages. I can't really say the author is wrong on her opinions though, because, well, let me put it this way: It's like I can say anything about aliens -- I can't prove any of the arguments, but you can't disprove them either.

The Amazon book rating system is a great way for buyers to decide how good a book is. This time, however, it has been abused. I believe the author or publisher asked people to give 5-star reviews. I can't prove this argument, but hey, you can't disprove it either.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book   October 18, 2008
I'm a very academic person, by nature, and so I like to read books that have a lot of information in them, but which doesn't just present common sense over and over throughout it.

This book is a great book, in my opinion. It covers such things as the eyes, the hands, the arms, the legs, etc. You learn how to tell if people might be lying, or how they are probably feeling. I'm in the military, and when I'm on post and reading this, everyone's interested in it. Already 3 other people want to borrow it when I'm done.

The author is very easy to read, and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. This book covers pretty much anything you would think of buying this book for; dating, sales, relationships, business, etc. I would highly recommend this book if you're interested in being able to read others body language, and get a good idea of what is really going on with them, since their verbal language is only about 7% of it.
