Amazon.com Review
"My name is Dovey Coe, and I reckon it don't matter if you like me or not. I'm here to lay the record straight, to let you know them folks saying I done a terrible thing are liars.... I hated Parnell Caraway as much as the next person, but I didn't kill him."

Twelve-year-old Dovey has never had the slightest problem speaking her mind. But now, faced with a murder trial, she may just have to keep her mouth shut while the slick city lawyer takes care of things. It all started when the wealthy, vain, greedy Parnell takes a notion to win Dovey's older sister, trying to convince her she's too pretty to go off to college. But behind her back, he treats Dovey and her deaf brother Amos like dirt all summer long. Dovey gets in her jabs whenever she can--until the day she finds herself trapped in a back room with an irate, vengeful Parnell. Things don't look too good for Dovey when she comes to and finds her enemy dead on the floor next to her.

Southern courtroom drama, a sassy female protagonist, a misunderstood yet gentle neighborhood character, vicious and narrow-minded villains--sound familiar? Yes, there's a lot of Harper Lee's Scout in Dovey, and Boo Radley in Amos (To Kill a Mockingbird). But Frances O'Roark Dowell's absorbing, readable story of families, prejudice, love, and hate has a life all its own. Dovey is an impeccably drawn heroine, complete with Southern dialect, sturdy self-esteem, and down-home wisdom. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Product Description
My name is Dovey Coe and I reckon it don't matter if you like me or not. I'm here to lay the record straight, to let you know them folks saying I done a terrible thing are liars. I aim to prove it, too. I hated Parnell Caraway as much as the next person, but I didn't kill him.

Dovey Coe says what's on her mind, so it's no secret that she can't stand Parnell Caraway. Parnell may be the son of the richest man in town, but he's mean and snobby, and Dovey can't stand the fact that he's courting her sister, Caroline, or the way he treats her brother, Amos, as if he were stupid just because he can't hear.

So when Parnell turns up dead, and Dovey's in the room where his body is discovered, she soon finds herself on trial for murder. Can the outspoken Dovey sit still and trust a city slicker lawyer who's still wet behind the ears to get her out of the biggest mess of her life?

5 out of 5 stars Middle Grade Fiction   December 5, 2007
There's not a lot I can tell you about this book that hasn't already been said. Francis O'Roark Dowell does a fantastic job building the character of Dovey Doe. Right from the first sentence the reader gets to know Dovey personally. Although we don't find out until the end how Parnell actually dies, we know, without a doubt that tough and sweet Dovey Coe could not have done it. No matter how bad it looks, we, the reader, have faith in her and cheer for her until the end. This is a great read from a great author.

5 out of 5 stars My 5th graders and I love this book!   July 6, 2007
Dovey is an irresistible character who you love and root for. Great to teach the inequality of social economic class in America. My kids loved reading it aloud with a mountain accent. Oh, did they dislike Parnell. I hightly recommend this read. Each year I find a girl in my class that has a bit of Dovey's spirit in her.

Dovey Coe speaks her mind. She'll tell you how she feels without thinking twice on the matter. She made it clear on many occasions how she felt about Parnell Caraway. I highly recommend this book for many reasons. I could not put Dovey Coe down; I did not know what Dovey would say next or what was coming. There were many surprises in this story that kept me on the edge of my seat; such as when Paris Caraway surprises Dovey at her house with the news of her `lost dog'. I would love to read another of this author's books because her style of writing is excellent. I think that this book is a great read for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book   March 14, 2007
"My name is Dovey Coe and I reckon it don't matter if you like me or not. I'm here to lay the record straight, to let you know them folks saying I done a terrible thing are liars. I aim to prove it, too. I hated Parnell Caraway as much as the next person, but I didn't kill him."

Unfortunately for Dovey, everyone thinks she did. In Dovey Coe by Frances O'Roark Dowell, Dovey is a twelve-year-old girl living in the mountains of North Carolina with her family. When the richest, snobbiest bachelor in Indian Creek, Parnell Caraway, begins to court her sister, outspoken Dovey has something to say about it. Soon, however, Parnell is found dead, with Dovey and incriminating evidence in the room with him. In the end, Dovey and her lawyer find the perfect proof, strong enough to sway the judge to close the case. Dovey Coe is an excellent quick read, a fun book for anyone.

One aspect of the novel I found intriguing is its authenticity and its realism. For instance, Dovey and her family are much more believable when they speak with their slight country twang. Also, the author's well-implemented ability to include everyday events without straying from the plot adds a believability factor to the story. Finally, with the Coes being a common, ordinary family, readers can easily relate to their trials and tribulations.

Another feature of the book that I enjoyed is the characters that grow throughout the story. Dovey, who always speaks her mind, learns that sometimes that isn't the best option, especially during the murder trial, in which one wrong word could send her to a girl's detention center for twenty years. Caroline, Dovey's older sister, slowly realizes that her looks aren't the only reason she's worth something. And finally, Amos, Dovey's deaf older brother, comes to appreciate Dovey's loyalty and help while Dovey recognizes his own.

One more characteristic of the novel that I found exceptional is its interesting and fast-moving plot. First of all, Dovey is always doing something, whether it be going into the woods to look for quartz or searching for interesting things at the market. Later, the plot begins to thicken as Parnell worms his way into the Coes' lives. And near the end, the story accelerates to a lightning pace as Dovey's future comes into the hands of her young lawyer Mr. Harding at the trial.

Undoubtedly my favorite part of the book is the likeable characters it involves. You immediately attach to Dovey, who always has something to say with a unique way of saying it. Even bystanders and minor characters come to life and become real to the reader. Ms. Dowell's Dovey Coe is powerful historical fiction, and Dovey will keep you hooked until the very end.

4 out of 5 stars Dovey Coe   February 16, 2007
Everybody knows Dovey hates her older sister's boyfriend, so when he is mysteriously murdered, and Dovey found in the scene of the crime when the body is discovered, everyone thinks she is the murderer, but she knows she isn't guilty. Dovey only hopes she can convince the judge. Dovey Coe is an original, funny, and suspenseful book. I recommend it to middle school readers looking for a mystery.

Dovey Coe is a very original book. Dovey Coe lives with her Mother, Father, older sister Caroline, and her deaf brother, Amos. Caroline is always though of as much prettier than Dovey, Caroline gets many suitors, while Dovey gets none. They live in rural, Indian Creek, North Carolina. Indian Creek is a small town. Dovey's sister, Caroline is being courted my Parnell the son of the richest family, the Caraways, is known for being snobby, rude, and conceited. Dovey is terribly upset when Caroline accepts. Parnell is at the Coe's house all the time. He treats Caroline very nicely, but is very rude to Dovey and treats her brother Amos like he's stupid, just because he can't hear. Amos and Dovey are very close and often go searching in the woods for herbs, Amos' dogs, Tom and Huck sniff them out so Amos and Dovey can sell them to doctors. Dovey also taught Amos to read and write. Caroline dreams of going to college, and then becoming a teacher.

Dovey Coe is a very funny book. Dovey and her family hold a going away party for Caroline; they hire a band, prepare a lot of food, and invite a large number of people. Once everyone arrives, Parnell gets up on stage to make a toast, during which he announces Caroline shouldn't go to college because she is too pretty, and then he asks her to marry him. Caroline refuses because of how rude he was. Parnell is very upset and leaves the party. Dovey and a friend of hers, Wilson, start courting. Wilson is very nice to Dovey and appreciates her for who she is.

The pages of Dovey Coe are filled with suspense, mystery and excitement. When Dovey's parents go to bring Caroline to teacher's college, Dovey and Amos go to stay with their grandparents. Dovey forgot something so runs home to get it. Paris Caraway, Parnell's little sister comes over and tells Dovey that Parnell has Tom locked up in his father's store because they got away. Dovey goes with her to get him. When Dovey arrives she has to go to the back storage room to get her brother's dog, Tom is there but so is Parnell. Dovey can tell right away that he is drunk. When Parnell tries to throw a brick at Tom, Dovey pulls out her pocket knife and just barely scratches Parnell. The next thing she knows she feels Huck licking her face, she sees Tom dead, Parnell's mother comes in, and sees him dead with no one but Dovey in the room. The trial comes and a lawyer is assigned to Dovey's case. The coroners reports that Parnell was killed by a blow to the head, they think it was from a soda canister, a bit of blood is found on the canister, they believe whoever killed Parnell accidentally cut themselves on the canister. Dovey seems to be losing the trial, when it lets out for a break. Dovey asks the lawyer what his plan is, he doesn't have one. Dovey has an idea from looking at the evidence table, where the soda canister is sitting. Dovey knows it looks to heavy for her to pick up. She demonstrates for the judge, and the case is closed. A few weeks latter a body is found in a creek, it is a fugitive with a cut where the sheriff believes he was cut by the canister, the sheriff decides he is the murder. After the trial is over, Dovey realizes the only way Huck could have gotten in the storage room Amos came into the store looking for Dovey, when he sees Parnell with the brick, and Dovey on the floor he picks up the soda canister and hits Parnell with it. He runs away, scared after he realized he killed Parnell. Dovey realizes that Amos saved her life, Parnell probably would have killed her if Amos hadn't killed him. Amos writes a letter to Dovey and explains he didn't mean to kill Parnell, that he only did it to save Dovey.

Dovey Coe is a mystery, a funny book, and original story. It is a quick and enjoyable read. I recommend it to readers looking for a suspenseful mystery.
