There are practically no sources of comparative information on the systems of deaf education around the world. The Deaf Way book by Erting et al (Gallaudet Press) comes closest, as a collection of lectures by deaf people from around the gloge. However, this book, Global Perspectives, goes in-depth to the history, structure, aims and methods of deaf education specifically. For the nine developing nations looked at (of 26 nations overall), such information is simply not available elsewhere. The standard set of questions addressed for all nations makes comparisons possible. Most importantly, the monograph length of each 26 case study has enabled many of the authors to give substantial context (cultural, educational history, etc.). Reflected in their treatment of disabled children is a glimpse at the underlying character of those varied societies. So the book may be useful to people studying those societies, as well as people in special education.
