Product Description
Parent-tested and kid-approved, a comprehensive, practical resource for wholesome, healthful meals children of all ages will eat -- and love In an era of McDiets, packed schedules, and stressful jobs, it's harder than ever to incorporate nutritious food into our children's daily lives. But you no longer have to rely on microwaved hot dogs and frozen pizza. In this essential cookbook, food -- and parenting -- experts Tracey Seaman and Tanya Wenman Steel offer help and hope, whether you're experienced in the kitchen or more inclined to head to the drive-through. Real Food for Healthy Kids features more than 200 easy-to-make recipes for school days and weekends, including breakfast, snacks, lunch, dinner, and even parties. Each recipe has been taste-tested by children and analyzed by a nutritionist. A power breakfast might feature Carrot Cake Oatmeal, Green Eggs-in-Ham Quiche Cups, or Hole-y Eggs! Keep kids energized with a Real Food lunch, such as Hail Caesar, Jr. Salad, Turkey Pinwheels, or Egg Salad Double-Decker Sandwiches. Seaman and Steel's snacks include Zucchini Tempura with Horseradish Dunk, Chewy Granola Bars, Happy Apple Toddies, and much more. Serve a mouthwatering family dinner: Peachy Keen Chicken, Super Steak Fajitas, or Princess and the Pea Risotto. Enjoy a scrumptious dessert: Cheery Cherry Plank, Brown Mouse, or Chocolate-Covered Strawberries. Seaman and Steel have spent the last four years developing and testing recipes to create nourishing dishes that kids of all ages, from babies to grad students, and even finicky eaters, vegetarians, and kids with food sensitivities will enjoy. Whatever recipes you choose, this indispensable cookbook is sure to become the resource you turn to every day for years to come. Equal parts cookbook, nutrition guide, daily menus, party planner, and parenting guide, Real Food for Healthy Kids will get your kids engaged in eating, happily and healthfully for a lifetime.

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed   October 24, 2008

I am very disappointed with this book. Recipes are boring and dishes that I've seen many times before. If it's available at your library, check it out there before buying it. It's not a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Real food, real easy   October 22, 2008
I read the book cover to cover, and found the essay part particularly helpful (suggetions on crudites to snack on before dinner, give veggies or fruit as second helpings). I made the blueberry muffins from the breakfast section this weekend for brunch and they could not have been easier. Mixing in whole wheat flour was a great idea and a healthy twist. My friend's 5-year-old twin girls LOVED them, as did all of us adults. Look forward to trying more.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother getting this book   October 18, 2008

I'm going to try to return this book if I can...I keep forgetting. The recipes are high in fat and are not all that original.

You can do better by just using foods as least processed as possible. Have your kids help you plan menus, shop for ingredients, and prepare the meals. Talk about the Food Guide Pyramid and use the Diabetes Plate Method to develop healthy meals and appropriate portion sizes. Go to www.mypyramid.gov for more ideas.

Download fast food and chain menu item nutrients and talk about wise choices before eating out.

Avoid eating/snacking in front of the TV. Make fresh fruit & veggies readily available. Talk about how good food tastes...help kids (and yourself) be mindful about what they're/you're eating.

Make a point of getting at least 1 hour of walking/active playing as a family. Limit TV & video games -- the time for these could be earned through age-appropriate chores.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas to escape fast food menus   October 14, 2008
What a great book filled with recipes to help escape the menus of fast food resturants in the midwest. A friend recommended this book and have I put it to good use. I especially liked knowing that all items were made and sampled in the kitchens of the authors. My children eat better and I have the best reason ever to challege their diets, good health.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook for familes!   October 9, 2008
This is the best family cookbook because they're healthy recipes for my family. I love the detailed information from prep time to calorie information. The personal comments and stories from the editors makes it like this cookbook was given to you from a trusted friend.

My kids are excited that I've finally expanded their school lunch options with all the great lunch recipes that are quick and tasty. I'm impressed that I've had such success with the dinner recipes that not only the kids like but my husband like too! I've already given this cookbook to a few friends and plan to give it as a holiday gift to many others!
