Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

This is the reference guide to everyday expressions in American Sign Language, providing the quickest way to converse with people who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Now updated and expanded, this bestselling manual is clearly illustrated with thousands of line drawings and is very easy to use. Organized by topic, its chapters focus on areas such as health, family, school, sports, travel, religion, time, money, food and drink, and even small talk. A detailed discussion of ASL grammar (very different from English grammar) and a compact dictionary of signs are also included.

This edition reflect the evolution of the language--changes in its grammar as well as changes that are a result of the recent movement toward replacing stereotypical signs with their neutral counterparts.

The only ASL phrase book available, this handy guide can function as both an instant reference tool and a long-term study guide.

3 out of 5 stars Great content, terrible drawings   May 24, 2008
This book has very clear explanations of ASL grammar and structure, and lots of useful vocabulary and phrases, but is hobbled by really confusing drawings. In many instances I had to look up a sign in another book ("Signing Illustrated", which has extremely clear drawings) because I was unable to understand a drawing in this one. A worthwhile book, but not practical as a single reference.

5 out of 5 stars A Guru's Review   January 4, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

After signing & interacting with the Deaf for 17 years, interpreting for 9, and teaching ASL for 3, I confidently recommend "The American Sign Language Phrase Book" for beginners. Its user-friendly, how-to approach is especially appropriate for those seeking simplicity & accuracy in basic everyday conversation. It teaches commonly used vocabulary in proper ASL sentence order, including facial expression and body shifting. Perfect for the beginner's do-it-yourself manual to gain the confidence that you're "signing it right!"

4 out of 5 stars Sent to son incarcerated in prison.   December 24, 2007

Son, incarcerated in prison, requested book. Hopes to use, following study, in efforts to find employment after release from prison.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful Reference   September 25, 2007
This book is very helpful with basics, but beyond simple phrases it does not contain very many signs... recommended for people learning sign language from scratch. Also, one should cross-reference with a A.S.L. online database to make sure signs are up-to-date.

This book teaches the use of simple phrases that are used in everyday speech. A good book.
