5 out of 5 stars How to have joy every day   April 24, 2008
This book transformed my faith in day to day living. I have read this book many times. On almost every page there is Scripture to uplift the soul. I learned how to effectively defeat the Devil when he attacks me. I learned how to find joy when it wasn't the Devil's fault. This book taught me how to Praise God on a level I had never experienced.

An easy book to read and dosn't have to be read in one sitting.
It is a joyous book which brings delight and happiness to one's soul. It is filled with great short stories. This is a book worth keeping in the home to read at anytime.

1 out of 5 stars Three reviews in one   October 21, 2007

The message of the book is "Praise God for everything". And that literally means everything.

I read this book at three different points in my life. Each time I received it differently.

When I first read it as a teenager, I was a "born-again Christian" (or rather, I belonged to the RC offshoot, the so-called "Charismatic Renewal"). I found the book awesome. Putting it into practice turned life into a wild adventure game full of twists and turns, but where winning was guaranteed!

When I read it again years later, I was still fairly religious, but now leaning strongly towards traditional Roman Catholicism. The book's main prescription is not in an area where Rome and Protestants differ, so it was still acceptable / inspiring. But I was more critical of the Bible quotes, noting that the author picks and choses which translation to use for a particular quote (he uses several translations, many of them dubious). Also he often takes quotes out of context.

I read the book again as an atheist (thanks to Dawkins' books, and their simple, common-sense message that the only thing worth believing is the truth). Now of course I was sharply aware that this book's message is simply that of Leibnitz's "Theodicee", which was devastatingly parodied in Voltaire's "Candide". Briefly, Leibnitz claimed that we lived in the best of all possible worlds, while Voltaire's sarcastic message was: of course, we don't! Also, I was far more skeptical about the miracles and visions that Carothers mentions as his frequent experience. They are poorly attested, to say the least.

One is uncomfortably aware of Carothers' history as a small-time con-man before he "found religion". Perhaps he just moved from one con-game to another bigger-time one, where he got active government encouragement and tax breaks. Or perhaps he is just deluded. Either way, I recommend healthy scepticism and Voltaire's "Candide" to any potential reader of this book.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life   July 22, 2007

I was just now filling out a form to send to "Crossings", in answer to their request for me to tell them about the book that changed my life. I decided to see if Amazon had the book, for the correct spelling of the author's name. So, here I am posting a review. Before I read this book, all my prayers were about me, myself and I. My prayer time was a miserable time. A friend let me read her copy. My prayers went from being about me, to praising God for who he was, his goodness, his mercy, and his love in my life, and that of my family. My prayer time became a joyful time. I found myself praising God, regardless of the situation I was facing, knowing my heavenly Father was in complete control of my life. While I've never agreed with Merlin that God sent it all...the good AND the evil, I believe it could not have come my way unless God ALLOWED it. (I'll put it this way: I agree with Joseph, in the Bible. 'you meant it for my harm, but God meant it for my good.') I am not posting a review for the sake of arguing with anyone. I will not. I just want to say that this book definitely changed my prayer life, therefore, my entire life. I encourage anyone and everyone to read it, especially if your prayer life is boring, or frustrating. It could change YOUR prayer life!
