I loved the beginning... January 7, 2009 I loved the beginning of this book, I thought it was so beautiful. I loved it until the middle, when the main characters hit a bump. Then, it moved so slow I skipped a lot of it so I could see what happened in the end.
Decent Summer Read, But Doesn't Move Beyond October 8, 2008 Overall, I think this is a decent summer read, but this book does not move beyond that in terms of emotional impact or plot.
The novel had a good hook from the start, that I cared about the characters despite the fact that they were not as developed as they could have been. After finishing the novel I felt that I didn't know them much better than after the first couple chapters.
I had two major problems with the book. First, the relationship between Riley and Alice was not fleshed out in a meaningful way. So much of the book is devoted to Alice & Paul that when complications with Riley arise, the relationship between the sisters is not well understood. Toward the end of the book, you get more interactions between them, but I think it comes too late. This leads to my second problem that the "impediment" to Alice and Paul's relationship being completely unbelievable. Without a better understanding the relationship between Riley and Alice, I didn't know why Alice would make such an agreement and it frustrated me to no end. Came across as a plot device to extend the length of the book.
But the resolution was satisfying and the writing is enjoyable. In fact, some sections are quite moving. Check it out from the library, enjoy the book at the beach - and then return it.
Sisterhood is Powerful July 27, 2008 A good exploration of the close reltionship between two sisters in their early 20's and how that interplays with a close male friend. Biggest problem is the less than believable plot twist which defines the work, when the secret of Riley's medical condition cannot be revealed by her sister Alice to her boyfriend Paul for an entire year. Secrets are difficult, if not impossible to keep, especially between three characters who are as close as these three are. It defies credibilty that Alice would so abruptly termainate her new love with Paul without any explanation whatsoever. I actually put the book down when this plot turn became a permanent part of the story. However, I picked it up again and I'm glad I did, because the depth of the exploration the sisters' relationship. Also a good east coast beach story. Beautiful cover.
