Excelente Book December 22, 2008 I read this book in both languages, is excelent, it recommend, portrays very well what is the Latino community, especially the Dominican Republic in the U.S. I recommend the version in English, enjoyed best the form of a peculiar write of Junot Diaz.
A big engine with little fuel to help it run December 18, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The author attempts to take the daily mundane life of Dominicans living during the Era of Trujillo and transform it to wonderful story. The dominican jerga (dominican slang) used in this book, which dates back to early 90's, will not be as funny to those non-spanish speaking even though the footnotes help a bit, but by the time you're done reading them you won't remember what it was making reference to. The writing style and the usage of spanglish definitely offers something new when reading this novel, but unfortunately it fails to achieve a believeable or even so, an original story (obviously a bit inspired on Vargas LLosa's La Fiesta del Chivo). I think it's time we move away from this period of history and start writing books based on other important characters in Dominican history. It truly fails to deliver at the beginning, the middle and near the end of the book, and at times it feels like the stories are just dragging on. In an unsuccessful attempt to convey a comedic novel it turns to a bitter sad story.
Divertida. November 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A dominican portrait October 8, 2008 An entertaining and somehow instructive story of a standard dominican family with their dominican way of living and understanding life. Straight forward, funny and at some point sad. Nice, modern literature for people who like to discover a different kind of writing.
