| Customer Reviews:
Richly entertaining story December 10, 2004 A great story about the deaf teacher who establish schools to educate deaf Americans
Quick, easy read, relatively uninformative February 15, 2004 Laurent Clerc was the person responsible for Deaf education in the United States. This book gives a fictionalized account of his early life, from growing up in revolution era France up to when he was about to leave to America. The book is fairly entertaining, and very easy and quick to read. However, many details that would interest the reader are left out, like Clerc's relationship to his mother. Though Carroll successfully portrays some of the hardships of life as a Deaf person, you really don't get much else out of this book.
