Product Description
If you give a cat a cupcake, he'll ask for some sprinkles to go with it. When you give him the sprinkles, he might spill some on the floor. Cleaning up will make him hot, so you'll give him a bathing suit . . . and that's just the beginning! The lovable cat who first appeared in If You Give a Pig a Party now has his very own book! Written in the tradition of the bestselling If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond's newest story will show everyone that Cat is where it's at!

Just as good as its predecessors November 15, 2008 This little cat is a welcome addition to the Numeroff menagerie. My two-year old loves it.
It's as good as most November 11, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
What happens if you give a cat a cupcake? Well, the cat may want sprinkles...and then some!
The premise of `If You Give A Cat A Cupcake,' like apparently the other books in this series, is the cat will then want one thing after another. The cat will want sprinkles on the cupcake, make a mess on the floor, to go to the gym, the beach, the museum of natural history, drop sand on the floor when removing its shoes, and so forth.
Like just about all good-quality children's books produced today, the illustrations are charming. The story is zany and would be fun for young children. However, I believe that the interest may wane a little for children past the first grade.
In all, `If You Give A Cat A Cupcake' is a good story, but not really distinguished in any meaningful way. As far as making this a holiday gift for your little reader, it's as good as most.
Too expensive November 8, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
My two older daughters are infatuated with the series Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3). They have all three books from the series and cannot wait for more to come. The most recent addition to the collection was Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World. Following the girls infatuation with the cats I bought "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" for my almost three years old son. Unfortunately the magic did not work. My son had some passing interest in the illustrations but did not care much about the story... Since he is not able to write a review I decided to do it on his behalf. I must say that I am disappointed by the fact that this book was practically a waste of money when my son is concerned, especially that I found it rather expensive. I think publishers should find a way of making books more affordable for parents on a low budget, especially when small kids are concerned. Maybe hardcover is not such a good idea for small kids after all... "Why Some Cats are Rascals" are paperback and for that reason much more affordable. On a positive side I find the illustrations in "If you Give a Cat..." indeed very appealing.
Another great "if you give..." book November 5, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Reviewed by Cayden (age 4) and Max (age 2) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (8/08)
"If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" is written in the format of the popular "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" book. "If you give a cat a cupcake, he'll ask for some sprinkles to go with it. When you give him sprinkles he might spill some on the floor. Cleaning up will make him hot, so you will give him a bathing suit and take him to the beach." The book continues on until you make a full circle back to the sprinkles and cupcake again.
Max: "Cupcake! Yum!" Cayden: "Cupcakes are real good, especially the frosting!"
Cayden: "He didn't just spill a little bit of sprinkles on the floor; I think he spilled the whole bottle!"
Max: "Trunks!" Cayden: "He put on swimming trunks like we do to go swimming."
Cayden: "I wonder why they built the sand castle in the water."
Cayden: "He sure has a lot of stuff in that bucket!"
Cayden: "Maybe I can try karate some day!"
Max: "Boat! Fish!"
Cayden: "He is getting sand all over the house! That is not good!"
Cayden: "There is the cupcake again!" Max: "Me want cupcake!"
Cayden: "That cat is pretty funny!"
Parent's comments:
My children love the "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" book so I figured that since "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" by Laura Numeroff is pretty much the same concept that they would enjoy this one as well and they definitely did. They thought that the cat's antics were hilarious and really got into it. There is a lot to look at in the illustrations and they are very entertaining. This book definitely was a winner with my children!
Age says 3-7 but my 2.5 year old enjoys it too October 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My 2.5 year old doesn't totally understand the cause and effect purpose of the book (at least I don't think he does) BUT we have great fun talking about the wonderful illustrations and making our own story for now. Illustrator did a smart job of incorporating the more familiar mouse from 'if you give a mouse a cookie' book into the busy pics and it is kinda like where is waldo for us.
