Listening to the Deaf
Amos Lassen
The diversity of the gay community includes people of all kinds and I am sure that most of us do not give this idea much thought. We do not stop to think how far this diversity extends and the deaf are as much a pert of it as anyone else. Raymond Luczak gives a voice to those in out community who cannot hear and his second anthology which includes writing by them is as diverse and varied as the community at large. We get a mosaic of our lives as we read the poetry, essays and stories of those who do not hear and we see and feel the frustration of those who find prejudice because they are both gay and deaf. "Eyes of Desire 2" is a chronicle of those that live while attempting to find acceptance. Luczak gives us a look at gay life and a sub-community that many have never thought about before and the book includes writings by gay men and women, transgenders and intersexed. We see how members of this group try to connect with others and we learn what it is like to not be able to hear what is going on them around them. The anthology contains writings by more than 85 people, both deaf and hearing, straight and gay and these are the voices of people that we seldom hear from. There are writings from all over the world and of people with varied backgrounds--i.e.--a Hindu lesbian, a deaf, blind and gay Jewish man, an Ethiopian bisexual woman, a deaf HIV-positive gay Black man, a deaf lesbian with an identical twin deaf lesbian, a hard of hearing transgender intersexed musician, and an older deaf non-signing Brit, to name a few. The writings come from all over the world and the topics that are dealt with run the gamut of gay life. Some of the situations are familiar but they include deafness as an added problem that many have to overcome. It's an amazing book that will open your eyes and it comes from those who do not have the ability to hear. It's a very, very special book.
appreciative thanks to Luczak May 10, 2008 The first thing I did when I got this book was making a beeline to my story that I had submitted to Raymond Luczak, the editor of *Eyes of Desire 2*. You should see the big smile I had on my face.
I vividly remember when a friend introduced me to the first *Eyes of Desire*. I was entranced because there was a book on Deaf GLBT's, telling about their lives and experiences. Plus, I knew some of the people featured in the book.
After more than a decade had passed, Luczak decided to do "part 2". However, this time, he would include people from a diverse background: gays, lesbians, bisexuals, trangenders, intersexes, racial minorities, internationals, Wiccans and many more. I was honored to have been asked to submit a piece about my life as a Deaf Gay Hispanic man.
*Eyes of Desires 2* is a wonderful anthology of Deaf GLBT's from around the world. People in this book have written about love, coming out, identity (gay and/or Deaf), transitions, frustration, abuse, family, acceptance, language, and many more. Some of them are relatable and others are unique and fascinating.
*Eyes of Desire* (1 & 2) is a labor of love of Luczak's. Without him, none of this would have been possible. So, I truly admire Luczak for making *Eyes of Desire* a reality...for Deaf GLBT's, once again, have a voice to share about their lives.
