It's a good general textbook on translation. The only drawback is that it makes too much reference to Arabic and Chinese, really interesting languages but not what I was expecting.
Good translation book for practioneers September 25, 2005 2 out of 32 found this review helpful
I ordered this book last month and I am expecting it at the post tomorrow. Though I am yet to receive the book, the whole process of buying online was easy and user-friendly. Book recommended for practising translators. Thanks
Politicized junk September 18, 2005 2 out of 27 found this review helpful
Ms. Baker's work suffers from her political extremism. She is well know for firing translators because they happened to be Israeli citizens, and calling on others to do so, and this animus is reflected in her work.
Translation Teachers Should Read This Book November 19, 2003 37 out of 40 found this review helpful
It is unfortunate that the only other reviewer of this book (so far, November 2003) has chosen to focus only on politics. As a teacher of translation, I have found Mona Baker's book to be invaluable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the somewhat thankless task of trying to teach an unteachable subject. For people who are trying to teach themselves some of the finer points of translation, this book is an excellent place to start, or pick up some pointers.
