Exactly what she needed! August 15, 2008 My sister is a recent ASL grad. Her goal is to be a religious interpreter. She's comfortable signing the spoken portion of service in most of the religions she's done so far but had stumbled on they hymns. She didn't know how to convey the meaning for hymns which tend to use words not commonly used in normal everyday language. I bought this book for her birthday knowing that it wasn't a "picture" book. It came in the mail this week and even though her bday is still a few days away I was so excited about it that I've already given it to her.
As a beginning interpreter she loves it. We sat and went through the book stopping on hymns we both knew how to sing and she, using the book, signed along as we sang. Large margins will allow her to make notes in the book for church specific things that she stumbles across and the text is large enough to where she can read it without having to be bent over it like normal hymnals.
This book is perfect for beginning to advanced interpreters. It is definitely not meant for someone who does not already have the signing skills down. Absolutely reccommended for purchase to anyone who's in the religious interpreting field.
No music or sign language signs July 8, 2008 I was greatly disappointed to find this big thick spiral "music" book (?) did Not have any music in it! There are no signs for sign language - Only words to many, many songs. It was very costly to send it back also. I wish I could have reviewed the inside when I ordered it.
Excellent resource for church interpreters September 2, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is intended for people who are already fluent in ASL - there are no signs pictured. If you need a religious sign dictionary, try Religious Signing by Elaine Costello or Interpreting at Church by Leo Yates Jr.
However, this an excellent resource for church interpreters. Hymns have been a thorn in my side when interpreting church over the years. Sometimes you can't find out what hymns will be used in advance or don't have time to prepare, which is often as labor intensive as interpreting Shakespeare. This book takes a lot of work out of conceptually accurate church interpreting.
Hymns for Signing-American Sign Language June 3, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you are learning to sign or if you have experience, this book is a major disapointment! It is very confussing. It doesn't tell you what things mean. I don't understand what reference the writer used that would enable the reader to figure it out.
No Signs July 7, 2005 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
When I purchased this book I expected to see the signs with the words. The book is a good resource, but unfortunately not quite what I expected. Would not have purchased if I knew the signs were missing.
