Clear, concise and useful to own! September 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I will start by saying that I'm not a teenager and I learnt a lot from this book. Generation Green is thorough, well written and can be your guide to going green. Whether you want a quick overview or go deeper into "Going Green," this is the book you want to start with. Even though we've all heard these two words at some point, this book tells you the real meaning behind them and the implications of ignoring them. It opened my eyes on so many issues that even though I may not change overnight, I will start slowly by being conscious of them and then making small changes. That is exactly what this book encourages you to do and for everyone to make a difference in their own small way.
The only drawback and what really prevented me from giving this book the full five stars is, being too concise in some places and the lack of illustrations which would have made the book more interesting for their target audience. But if you're curious about going green like me but don't have eneough information to start with, however small, I highly encourage you to get this book. Start small and feel good about your contribution to our world which has given us so much!
Inspirational and fun reading for teens and adults alike... September 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a twenty something San Franciscan, I live in the heart and generation of the Green movement. As a result, I have become increasingly conscious of environmental issues and I have recently felt compelled to take action and do my part. So when I spotted 'Generation Green' on the display table at my local independent book shop, I was instantly intrigued.
What a great investment this book turned out to be. Not only is full of important information about how we are destroying our beautiful planet, but it provides useful ideas on ways we can contribute individually and collectively in order to save Earth. Each chapter examines a different environmental issue and is organized to include celebrity interviews along with website suggestions to gain more insight on the areas that interest you. And because it's geared towards teens, Linda and her teenage son Tosh write in a playful manner, keeping the material light-hearted and fun. Reading 'Generation Green' left me feeling inspired and empowered. I have already implemented some of Linda and Tosh's suggestions to improve my habits and to reduce my carbon footprint. I highly recommend this book for anyone and everyone who hasn't already jumped on the Green wagon...it will change your life.
Will only appeal to those already eco-friendly September 6, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have mixed feelings in regards to this book. I liked a few of the ideas that were brought to my attention but most of the book was basic common sense or beyond the scope of what most adults, let alone teenagers, are willing to do.
I loved the intent of the book but I don't think it will hold the interest of most teens. It will appeal to a minority of kids who already hold these views and probably are already aware of most of the suggested tips to living green.
The writing itself was rather dry and long-winded except where the author attempted to seem cool to attract the interest of the teens (my guess is those hip words and phrases are going to get eye rolls from the teens i.e. the bamboo flooring is gorg!)
The best advice to us about trying to live greener comes from Ed Begley Jr. (most teens will have no idea who this is by the way)
"Start small and build. You don't run up Mount Everest. You get to base camp, you get acclimated, and then only climb as high as you can."
If we don't help create Generation Green - our world will continue to suffer and crumble. September 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Generation Green is a book that will truly make a difference with teens and anyone who reads it. I read it fairly quickly and am passing it along to my 18 year old son. This book will teach you ways you can make a difference in many ways, big and small. If each of us changes just one thing that we do we can make big changes. If we each change a few things and increase that over time, we can make even bigger changes and a huge difference for our future and our childrens futures. Why anyone would ignore or not do any of the things mentioned in this book, is just beyond me. This great little book lets teens know how much water it takes when they take a shower, and really just informs them of the facts of life all over the world and how easy we have it. It then tells them small things they can change in their lifestyle to make big differences. I think this book should be required reading for every high school. I plan on buying many and giving them to everyone I know, teens and adults. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would.
Well referenced, great green ideas but not attention-grabbing for Teens September 4, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Generation Green is a well referenced guide on how teens can be green. The ideas, lists, websites, and tips are interesting and most are doable (for adults not necessarily teens). However, the book is rather wordy and the lack of pictures and graphs makes it difficult to keep the interest of a teen. The interviews with teens could be written with more flair and pizzazz as several can really put you to sleep. It's clear that an adult wrote the book without regard for the short teen attention span.
I recommend this book for adults with little to no knowledge of how to be green. The chapters Greener Schools and Careers, Step Up and Speak Out and A Day in a Green Life were attention-grabbing giving workable tips to reaching out to the community and making `being green' part of your everyday life. The resource section is complete with websites, magazines, organizations and books for further reference. The saving grace for this book is the interactive website - oops that doesn't count but it sure is green!
