Product Description For every parent who struggles with their baby's sleep (and for every parent who wishes their toddler had better sleep habits), finally a straightforward, all-natural solution to help baby get the sleep she needs—both through the night and during the day. A sleep researcher with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, Dr. Polly Moore has created a simple, foolproof method based on the basic human rest and activity cycle (BRAC), which occurs every hour and a half. According to the BRAC, baby should go back for a nap a mere 90 minutes after waking up—that's right: 90 minutes. The program is called N.A.P.S.—Note time when baby wakes up, Add 90 minutes, Play, feed, or pursue other activities, then, at the end of the 90 minutes, Soothe baby back to sleep. When baby wakes up again, whether after a short or a long nap, start the cycle over. And, although it sounds counterintuitive, frequent napping actually helps baby sleep through the night.
In a reassuring and accessible style, Dr. Moore explains how and why the program works; the benefits of napping—a happier, healthier baby with a headstart on cognitive development and emotional intelligence; how to implement it for babies at various ages, from two weeks to a year; and how to use it to solve common sleep programs, such as a baby's need to be held, baby waking up too early in the morning, baby getting a second wind before bedtime, baby confusing day and night, and more. The Wire-O-bound book includes a guided journal for recording baby's sleepy signals and sleep difficulties, a daily log for keeping track of baby's nap times, and space to note baby's milestones—all peppered with humorous, inspirational quotes.

A True Parent must-have! September 16, 2008 I thought that my baby was just fussy the fisrt 9 or 10 weeks of his life, and then I got this book and found out that he was just sleep deprived. true! This was helpful knowledge to my husband to know that we are on 90 minute cycles and could judge this like clockwork when I was at work on the weekends. Good thing I found the book just in the nick of time, I went back to work at 12 weeks of leave, and got the book when the baby was 11 weeks old. The results are there that quickly. He is now 6 months and loves his naps and was sleeping through the night at about 4 months. Everyone comments on what a good baby he is! Thank you to the author!
My favorite book dealing with newborns and sleep September 6, 2008 I received this book when my baby was about six weeks old and I wish I'd had it from the get-go. I had been feeling guilty about wanting my baby to sleep more, but Moore's discussion of the benefits of sleep (esp. daytime sleep which other books don't emphasize enough) completely convinced me of its importance and of the role I needed to take in helping my baby get to sleep. I also realized that many times when he was crying or fussing he really was asking for help sleeping and was not hungry or wet or uncomfortable or gassy as I'd assumed. I like that Moore is clear throughout the book about what ages she's talking about. Many other books about baby sleep are vague in this area and I thought my baby was "behind" on how much sleep he was getting and I now realize he's doing average or better in this area. We've been following N.A.P.S. pretty closely (though not religiously) and have seen a huge improvement in the amount of sleep our son is getting and also a big difference in his mood when he's awake. I think Moore's dual role as a sleep researcher and a mother makes her ideally situated to explain how sleep works in babies from a scientific vantage as well as how this plays out in the realities of life with a baby. The only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is that it is not as useful as a "sleep training" book (which it doesn't really set out to be) for getting your baby to sleep through the night, but I think it's invaluable in the early months before you choose a method or philosophy for more consistent sleep training.
This book really helped me September 2, 2008 This book was very helpful understanding sleep cycles. I read it during my pregnancy and wasn't sure it would work. It definately did. I was able to recognize my baby's cues with the help of this book. As soon as she had 90 minutes of awake time (eating, diaper, etc) she would start to rub her eyes and get fussy. This was my cue to help soothe her to sleep. And sleep she did. A well rested baby is a happy one! She was sleeping through the night at 6 weeks. It was a great purchase! I wish I had this book with my first child!
Wish I would have had this book sooner... July 23, 2008 In the six months since my son Benjamin was born, I have read every book on baby sleep available on the market. (Or at least it feels that way!) From Ferber to Pantley, who represent opposite ends of the baby sleep debate, I have been bombarded by different tips and tricks on how to get my son to sleep most effectively. My biggest problem to date has been determining a nap schedule that works for him. Dr. Moore provides a melding of all the philosophies in a direct, functional approach that is based on sound scientific research. I always like to know the WHY behind the choices I make as a parent, and she provides some interesting commentary on why many parents face the problems they do when it comes to baby sleep.
After employing her principals with my son for just a few days, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the quality of his daytime sleep. The BRAC (Basic Rest and Activity Cycle) is strong in him! I will recommend this book to all of my friends with young babies or to anyone I know of who is having a baby because the information makes so much sense. Currently, I just laid Benjamin down for his nap, and he's on the edge of falling asleep, making a few happy noises, right at the end of his 90 minute cycle. (Almost to the minute! It's sort of scary!)

I purchased this for my granddaughter who was having problems with her newborn's sleeping habits. It helped somewhat, so for that she was very grateful.
