Amazon.com Review
The Internet and the Information Age promise all the data you can take, but fall short when it comes to helping you understand it all. If you've decided to learn more about your health, the language of medicine can be a daunting obstacle. Webster's New World Medical Dictionary, created in partnership with MedicineNet.com, is an excellent first reference for nonprofessionals; the thousands of definitions are clearly and precisely written and cross-referenced in plain language. The content is "100 percent doctor-produced" and highly reliable, yet edited well enough that those of us on the other side of the insurance card can grasp the meaning quickly. Whether your kid has a greenstick fracture, you want to find out what's so terrible about tetanus that you need a shot, or your tests came back "WNL," you'll find that a little learning, far from being a dangerous thing, can offer greater peace of mind and help you deal more directly with your health care. The accompanying CD-ROM includes a fully searchable electronic version of the text (great for laptops!) and web links to MedicineNet.com's extensive free information on treatments and drugs. It won't beat seven to nine years of study and training, but Webster's New World Medical Dictionary will help you understand your doctor and your health. --Rob Lightner

Product Description
The most up-to-date layman's guide to medical terms, treatments, and pharmaceuticals

More Americans every day are focused on issues of health and well-being. While 10 years ago, most consumers accepted their doctor's advice blindly, today many question their doctors carefully about procedures, drug therapy, diseases, and other medical concerns. As the country continues to move toward service provided by large health care organizations, more consumers will take responsibility for understanding their medical needs.

Webster's New World is proud to offer an important new entry in the medical reference market - the Webster's New World Medical Dictionary. Partnering with the doctors from MedicineNet.com, the Medical Dictionary takes advantage of the expertise of 50 doctors in 24 specialized fields ranging from pediatrics to pathology. Edited by an expert medical author, the Dictionary of Medical Terms is authoritative yet accessible to the layperson. This dictionary represents the most up-to-date medical reference on the market today.

  • More than 7,500 medical terms, treatments, and medicines.
The book also features a CD-ROM for instant access to the dictionary and directly to the MedicineNet.com web site.

4 out of 5 stars Only 1 Oddity   October 13, 2008
Overall, not much you can really review on something like this. However I found it odd that there is no pronunciation guide for any of the terms listed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!   September 22, 2008
I have to say this is my first medical dictornary I have bought. I work in preauthorization in a medical facility and it comes in very handy. It's paperback and it's not too big so I can jsut it in my bag. Also ordering from Amazon, it cheaper and quick delivery to my door step. Great job Amazon!
