5 out of 5 stars Tranquility found   August 23, 2008

Visual aids augment the auditory input from the CDs to bring focus to concentration and relaxation. This is how to UNPLUG from the screaming demands of modern society and regain inner peace.

5 out of 5 stars I AM GOING TO UNPLUG MORE OFTEN   June 16, 2008

I AM A SHARON SALZBERG FAN. I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY INEXPENSIVE INVESTMENT FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO EXPLORE AND ACTUALLY TRY OUT MEDITATION IN THEIR LIVES. THE PAY-OFFS, AS FAR AS MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL BEING ARE CONCERNED, ARE ENORMOUS. I REALIZE THAT MEDITATION GOES BEYOND THESE TWO BY-PRODUCTS...AS YOU WILL DISCOVER...

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to meditation   March 2, 2008
44 out of 44 found this review helpful

This is a simple, and pleasant introduction into meditation. It includes a brief booklet with 25 pages of instruction broken into eight principles, 32 contemplation cards that follow the same principles, and two CD's to assist with meditation. The eight principles are:
1.Calming the Mind
2.Trusting Yourself
3.Facing Challenges
4.Letting Go
5.Being Present
6.Opening the Heart
7.Knowing Yourself
8.Being with the World

She introduces her book by explaining that we can all have an inner "Wyoming." This is a peaceful place with vast open spaces, freedom, room to move, and a feeling of being unconfined. In order to reach this inner Wyoming, we need to slow down and unplug from our fast paced life. We are used to thinking of an adventure as an exotic vacation or learning to bungee jump. But we can have an adventure by getting to know ourselves and that which surrounds us. Meditation is a wonderful tool that allows us to reach this inner sanctum.

She explains that we focus on the positives in our lives, deny the negatives and become numb to the neutrals. When we become disconnected like this, we tend to wait for an intense experience to wake us up.

My favorite line in the book is "It is better to do nothing than waste your time" What an awesome sentiment! Doing nothing means stopping what we normally do so we can gain new perspectives on our lives and see a deeper reality.

One of my favorite contemplation cards on Being Present, says "The simple act of being completely present to another person is truly an act of love--no drama required." How true that is.
