Eh...kind of unnecessary. October 31, 2005 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
If you just adopted a deaf dog, it's nice to know that there are other people who have successfully trained deaf dogs. You'll get that from this book, but otherwise this book is kind of unnessary. There are online resources to get you started with training tips (like getting a deaf dog's attention by flicking the lights). But beyond that, training is just the same as with a hearing dog. I don't want to un-recommend it, but it's just not entirely necessary.
Living With A Deaf Dog September 30, 2005 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Great book! Full of help and hope for owners of deaf dogs. Everything is ready to use and easy to understand!
Not what I expected November 5, 2004 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
This book, in my opinion, is more of a social illustration of the deaf dog rather than an aid to living with and training a deaf dog.Realistically, training a deaf dog is no different than a hearing dog, except you must use hand signals and you have to find an alternate way to get their attention.I think what the author was trying to do is great, but, except for some statistics and research articles, it was not very helpful to me in our daily life.In one particular case, the author's advice is downright dangerous if you are not an experienced dog handler. DO NOT EVER attempt "Alpha" rolls if you have a deaf and or aggressive dog!!!!!!DO NOT hit your dog with a newspaper!DO NOT hit your dog with your hands or anything else!Just a word of caution.....
Recommend to any owner of a deaf dog September 28, 2003 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is the first book any owner of a deaf dog should get. It helps with the basics and helps you realize that your dog can live a normal life. Because of this book I took my dog to a dog trainer and my dog learned basic obedience along with all the hearing dogs. The trainer was wonderful about helping us. I also bought some sign language books to learn other signs to teach my dog also.
A book to relate to! July 27, 2001 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
I adopted a puppy from the animal shelter about 3 months ago and about two weeks later realized she was deaf. This book helped me so much to just relate to the stories that other owners of deaf dogs wrote about how they interact with their dog and different ways to communicate with them. There is a very special bond already between myself and Winnie, because she doesn't hear, she is more in tune with my facial expressions and can sense my mood like no other dog I have ever owned. I have already taught her some of the different signs suggested in the book and we are learning more every day. I definitely recomend this book not only to those who have deaf dogs but to any dog owner!
